Join us to help create a wave of change…
Change for the better is impossible without the commitment of people and communities. At Planet Aware we work with and support people who share our vision to connect children , young people, their families and communities to our Coast and Ocean. We hope with that by connecting and learning about our coastal environment and the ocean in creative ways, alongside positive time spent on the coast, we can help to ensure the next generation is an Ocean Literate generation. By this we mean that future generations will have a better understanding of how and why the Ocean is vital to our daily lives. That future generations will live in ways that positively impact, rather than damage Ocean health by making better choices about how we use our Planet’s resources.
We create connection to our Coast and Ocean by :
Providing fun activities and opportunities on the Coast for play, exploration and learning e.g Coastal Kids ( beach school)
Running creative and informative workshops and events to increase awareness and appreciation of why the Ocean is important to our lives and the impact we have on them e.g Story telling workshops in schools, “Plastic Conundrum” workshops.
Running fun and creative beach based activities for families e.g beach cleaning , nurdle hunts etc all with a hint of song, art and story.
Welcoming Business to support schemes and projects that can support the above and promote create change within their organisation/community e.g sponsorship of events, Corporate beach cleans to help fund our work.
Many of our projects include an opportunity for people to give their time and share their skills as volunteers – and would be impossible without their involvement.
Find out more about volunteering with Planet Aware or visit our Corporate Volunteering page if you are part of a larger organisation and you would like to book a corporate team-building day with us or help us fund raise for our projects.

Beach Cleaners usually give a couple of hours every four to eight weeks to help clean up areas of the IOW coast as part of an organised small group clean. We have a “core” group that go to the less accessible beaches and may also volunteer in running our family events.
Why volunteer as a beach cleaner?
Getting outside and active is a great way to maintaining good mental health. Volunteering as a beach cleaner in our organised group litter picks is a great way to connect with other people, do something positive and get some exercise and fresh air. Being by the sea has a measurably positive impact on mental health.
Planet Aware satellite group leader
If you are keen to run your own local group but would like the support of Planet Aware to help with publicity, admin and other aspects then this could be the role for you. You will probably need to be able to dedicate a couple of hours a week to this role.
In this role you can run Planet Aware beach cleans and help promote our projects e.g Refill, Coastal creatives etc
Why run your own group?
Setting up your own group is a great way to connect with your local community, to use your skills and build up some new skills and knowledge along the way. This is a great way to lead on making a change.
This is an opportunity to meet people, enthuse them about the oceans, talk to them about how to cut their consumption and invite them to play our beach clean game or get involved in other activities. These are one off opportunities lasting a few hours for a few days at a time and are usually over the summer.
Why help out as an event volunteer?
Working at events is a good way of building up some people skills and develop and use your skills and knowledge about the environment. You will have a chance to connect with people and help them make small but important changes in their lives!
If you have an idea for a project that supports ocean literacy or encourages people to reduce their consumption of the planet’s resource – but you need some help developing it – then do get in touch! We would love to find out what we can do to support you.
Why help out as a project creator
Being part of a team to develop a great idea is rewarding as it means you can get your idea out there without having to think of everything yourself. And it is a great thing to show a potential employer!
How we support you as a volunteer
When you volunteer with Planet Aware you will have a named contact to support you in your role, answer any questions and help you with your volunteering. Volunteer activities are covered by our insurance and you will be given training and support so that you can volunteer safely. If you are working with the public or our children’s events you will need a DBS check.
Depending on how long your volunteer with us and what sort of volunteering you do we can provide a reference for a future employer.
