Be part of the change
Change for the better is impossible without the commitment of people and communities. At Planet Aware we work with and support people who share the vision of Planet Aware to promote smarter resource use and care for our oceans – doing more while using less. Many of our projects include an opportunity for people to give their time and share their skills as volunteers – and would be impossible without their involvement.
We work with partners to help deliver specific projects such as Textile Transformation and My Planet My Voice. Planet Aware also supports projects led by others by providing communication, outreach and behaviour change. Get in touch to find out more.
Through volunteering we hope that people will learn more about making smarter use of our planet’s precious resources and the role and value of our oceans. Find out more about volunteering with Planet Aware or visit our Corporate Volunteering page if you are part of a larger organisation and you would like to book a corporate team-building day with us.
You can get involved with Planet Aware by
- Joining our regular beach cleaning team on the Isle of Wight or in Havant
- Setting up a satellite Planet Aware group with our support
- Helping out at events and talks
- Co-creating a new project with us
- Supporting our work by sharing your skills
Beach Cleaners usually give a couple of hours every four to eight weeks to help clean up areas of the Solent coast as part of an organised small group clean.
Why volunteer as a beach cleaner?
Getting outside and active is a great way to maintaining good mental health. Volunteering as a beach cleaner in our organised group litter picks is a great way to connect with other people, do something positive and get some exercise and fresh air. Being by the sea has a measurably positive impact on mental health.
Planet Aware satellite group leader
If you are keen to run your own local group but would like the support of Planet Aware to help with publicity, admin and other aspects then this could be the role for you. You will probably need to be able to dedicate a couple of hours a week to this role.
Why run your own group?
Setting up your own environmental group is a great way to connect with your local community and build up some skills and knowledge along the way. This is a great way to lead on making a change.
This is an opportunity to meet people, enthuse them about the oceans, talk to them about how to cut their consumption and invite them to play our beach clean game or get involved in other activities. These are one off opportunities lasting a few hours for a few days at a time and are usually over the summer.
Why help out as an event volunteer?
Working at events is a good way of building up some people skills and you will get a crash course in some of the environmental challenges and activities in the local area. You will have a chance to connect with people and help them make small but important changes in their lives!
If you have an idea for a project that supports ocean literacy or encourages people to reduce their consumption of the planet’s resource – but you need some help developing it – then do get in touch! We would love to find out what we can do to support you.
Why help out as a project creator
Being part of a team to develop a great idea is rewarding as it means you can get your idea out there without having to thing of everything yourself. And it is a great thing to show a potential employer!
How we support you as a volunteer
When you volunteer with Planet Aware you will have a named contact to support you in your role, answer any questions and help you with your volunteering. Volunteer activities are covered by our insurance and you will be given training and support so that you can volunteer safely.
Depending on how long your volunteer with us and what sort of volunteering you do we can provide a reference for a future employer.
